Puerto Rico is an amazing blend of many different influences, and a magnificent study in contrasts. The climate is wonderful, with temperatures usually around 75-80 degrees. There are sunny beaches, and high mountains; lush tropical rain forest and arid desert regions; early forts and cobble stoned streets next to modern communities. Here you will find a warm, hospitable population with incredible diversity.
The culture in Puerto Rico is unique. The people here are passionate about everything in their lives: politics, food, art, poetry, dance and music; which ranges from folkloric to symphony. Education is also crucial to life in Puerto Rico. There are over 2,000 schools, and literacy rates exceed 90% since school attendance is mandatory for ages 6-17. Scientific achievements include an important observatory.
Despite all the differences, there are also many similarities. Since PR is a Commonwealth of the US, our currency, banking and defense systems are the same. We observe all US holidays, plus 9 of our own. We do not pay Federal income tax, because we do not have voting representation. |
